With private assessments, there are also additional criteria to be met, per Mississippi Department of Education guidelines. Intellectually gifted children and youth are those who perform or who have demonstrated the potential to perform at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Find out more about gifted testing and programs in your local school district. This means that gifted programs generally require a student to score in the top 1-3, or above the 97th percentile. Some parents may choose to pursue private testing at their own expense. Gifted Education provides technical assistance to all public school systems serving Alabama’s gifted children. As stated above, a score of 132 could be considered a typical cutoff score for gifted programs. Students who are new to our district after the cutoff date are exempt from this deadline. While schools are most likely to be interested in intellectual and academic giftedness, parents should be supportive of their childs creative, artistic, or other gifts. Referrals received after this time will be processed after July 1. So, even if your child isnt an academic whiz, they may be gifted in other areas. Please note: MCS does have a referral cutoff date of the Friday before Spring Break, so that testing may be completed and plans made for the next year. Students possessing these abilities can be found in all populations. The Jefferson County Public Schools Gifted and Talented Department’s vision is to Actualize Learner’s Potential for gifted and high-ability learners through a focus on access, equity, inclusion, and diversity. These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regular school program. Each building has a school-level gifted contact-generally the school counselor or gifted teacher-who can be approached if one would like to refer a student for Pathways. Madison County Schools has an open referral policy and accepts gifted referrals in grades 2-8 throughout the school year. Students who do not qualify during universal screening, but are thought might be good candidates for the gifted program, can also be referred at this time. Students who qualify on the screener are referred for further testing. All students in the Madison County Schools are universally screened in both first and second grades.
